Business phone system for a small office

You need a business number that rings the right people, takes texts, and doesn't require a closet full of equipment. That runs $75 to $165 a month for five.

Prices checked October 5, 2026 on each company's own pricing page. Written by Canny Software, Palm Desert.

The pick

Quo (formerly OpenPhone), $15 to $33 per user

Starter is $19 a user monthly or $15 on annual billing. Business is $33 or $23 and adds what a team needs. Each user gets a number with unlimited US and Canada calls and texts, and a shared number lets the whole office answer one line. Extra numbers are $5 each.

Runner-up

Google Voice, $20 per user

The Standard plan is $20 a user and includes ring groups and an auto attendant. It only makes sense if you already pay for Google Workspace, which it requires. The $10 Starter plan has neither feature, and Voice is not meant for marketing texts.

A five-person office pays for depth it will not use. Their own page leads with add-on "boosters" at $25 to $39, and term contracts that renew automatically are the riskiest in this group.

How to decide in two minutes

If customers text you, choose Quo. If you already live in Google Workspace and mostly take calls, add Google Voice Standard.

Keep your existing number either way. Both will port it in, and you should not cancel the old service until the port is finished.

Common questions

Can I keep my current business number?

Yes. Moving a number is called porting and takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Do not cancel your old provider until it completes, or you can lose the number.

Do I need desk phones?

No. These systems run on a computer or a phone app. Desk phones are optional.

What is texting registration?

US carriers require businesses to register before sending texts from a business number. Your phone provider walks you through it, and there is usually a small fee.
